Singer-songwriter James Carter Cathcart was a guest on The Time Machine and shared his thoughts about his new album "I Was Missing You". For the last thirty years, The Time Machine has had the music of The Laughing Dogs in rotation on the FM radio airwaves in Hawaii and having one of the founding members of The Laughing Dogs on the broadcast was an honor. James has kept himself busy over the years as a musician and has performed with Rupert Holmes, The Roches, Dave Brubeck, Chris Spedding, Ace Frehley, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Katey Sagal, John Tesh, James Ingram, Bob Mintzer, Gerald Alston, Michael and Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, General Johnson and Garland Jeffreys. In addition, James has done numerous voice over gigs for commercials and cartoons, including "Bobby's World" and the show that engulfs most of his time, the long running "Pokémon" series.
Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include Michael Carpenter, Rupert Holmes and The Laughing Dogs.
As producer of The Time Machine, Ashley Starr found herself heading off to Japan for a last minute fun filled adventure while the remainder of the radio staff had to fend for themselves. Air talent Summer Blue was running late (Hanging out at the beach perhaps?) which left radio co-host Michael McCartney alone in the studio until she arrived. This afternoon FM broadcast featured brand new covers from Michael Carpenter doing "They Don't Know" (Kirsty MacColl's song that was a hit for Tracy Ullman and featured Paul McCartney in her music video) plus Butch Walker took a cool stab at Taylor Swift's hit song "You Belong With Me". Both Butch Walker and Michael Carpenter have had fun recording covers in the past and the two new songs on this aircheck are toe tappers. New music from Weezer, Taylor Swift, Jonathan Coulton and Mark Hudson can also be heard on the broadcast.
Also featured on this Maui radio aircheck, while the waterfalls and streams flowed into the ocean near the beaches of Maui, includes music from Butterfly Boucher, The Handcuffs, Nelson Bragg, Second Saturday, Kristin Chenoweth, The Beatles, Poplord, Carly Simon, Luzer, Carole Bayer Sager, Mike Viola, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Rap Reiplinger, Latch Key Kid, Gilbert O' Sullivan and Lea Salonga & Brad Kane .
Singer-songwriter Anny Celsi was a guest on The Time Machine last week. We've enjoyed playing her latest album "Tangle-Free World" on the air the past few weeks and it was a pleasure having Anny on the broadcast to discuss her music . Her album is filled with talented artists that have been a part of our playlists over the years like; Robbie Rist, Evie Sands, Teresa Cowles, Adam Marsland, Rick Gallego and Nelson Bragg. Nelson also produced the album and even does a duet with Anny on the 1967 classic Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra song "Some Velvet Morning". Steve Refling joins the mix as well as Probyn Gregory and Nick Walusko. Phil Parlapiano, Amy Farris, Carl Byron, Shawn Bryant, Dave Sutton and Jonny DuFresne are just a few more gifted musicians that put their craft on the album. Other musicians add to the sound of this incredible listening experience.
Paul McCartney's brand new song for the upcoming film "Everybody's Fine" with Robert DeNiro, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Katherine Moennig, Melissa Leo and Sam Rockwell is also heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast. The film will be released this December. Songs from other artists also heard on this radio broadcast include both Rachael Yamagata and Eytan Mirsky, who are not strangers to having their music fill the soundtracks of motion pictures. Rounding out the radio show are songs from Trooper, Ben Lee and the latest from the prolific Jonathan Coulton.

Singer-songwriter Laurie Biagini's music has been a part of our broadcast the past few years and she was so taken away with Anny Celsi's album that she decided to share a review of "Tangle-Free World":
Every once in awhile, an album comes along that impacts me such to a point that I simply have to write about it. I purchased Anny Celsi's album "Tangle-Free World" through iTunes on the weekend and after the first few bars of the title track, this album grabbed my attention, and I turned the volume, up - way up! By the time I got to the third track I decided that it's time to put on my writer hat and review this gem of a record.
Ever hear a song that literally makes you feel electric? Something so beautiful and moving that you feel kind of numb and awe-struck? Put on the title track of "Tangle Free World" and if you're like me, expect a wonderful auditory experience. Beautiful melody, catchy, exquisite harmonies, and a rhythm track that would make for perfect driving music. This song will head to the front of the list of my favorites to listen to while driving fast along scenic highways.
"Thanksgiving in Hollywood" is another favorite on this album. Starts out with a bit of a melancholy introduction then picks up the pace with plenty of jangly guitars (which I love) and some very cool organ and lead guitar contributing to a wonderful folk-pop sound. The mood is a bit dark and mysterious, yet uplifting at the same time. One of my favorite tracks on the album.
Another favorite is "First Love Freezes", a beautiful melody and Anny's soft and haunting vocal is perfect for this very pretty ballad. Again, complemented by lush harmony vocals and I absolutely love the guitar work in this one.
"The Night She Learned to Drive" is a wonderful tune that has such heartfelt lyrics, and is performed with a vibe of re-assurance and hope. The song has the perfect feel to match the theme of the lyrics. It's another song that features a traveling rhythm that would be great to listen to on a road trip. A beautiful example of classic Americana in its most perfect form.
Also add "Piece of Heaven" to my list of favorite tracks on this album - a fun, upbeat jangly pop tune with a classic Monkee-esque sound from my favorite pop era. This one will not only get your toes-tapping, but you may easily find yourself singing along to this very catchy track.
"Sally Go Round the Roses", a fantastic cover of the Jaynetts 1963 hit, is pure fun. Pop music legend Evie Sands and Teresa Cowles provide backing vocals which add another dimension to the overall girl-group feel of this great song. The sixties vibe is well-preserved in the production, but with a cleaner, fresher sound. The "tangle-free" outtro at the end was quite a pleasant surprise as well!
I previously had somewhat limited interest in Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra's "Some Velvet Morning", but the version on this album so beautifully performed by Anny Celsi and Nelson Bragg, has garnered repeated listens. Their flawless soulful vocals, combined with a beautifully performed instrumental track have resulted in a new interest in this classic for this listener.
This album has so many dimensions to it that really give the record an overall dynamic of several moods and vibes that intertwine together so well, yet keeping a smooth path or 'tangle-free' experience for the listener. Anny really shines in this album. A must-have for your collection, this album has been added to my favorites and will inevitably get extensive play from this fan.
10 out of 10!

International recording artist, film actress and one of Broadway's superstars, Lea Salonga, was our guest today. She stopped by the WILD 105.5 FM studios to discuss her latest concert performance on Maui with radio host Jay J on KPMW. Lea also brought along her three year old daughter whose innocence at the microphone was adorable. Lea talked with Jay J about her music, stage and film work along with some of the proceeds of this Friday night's concert going towards Typhoon Relief for the Philippines.
Rocker and singer-songwriter Brian Ray was our guest DJ on The Time Machine this past month. Not only did he spin some cool songs from a variety of artists while sitting in for Summer Blue (who was having a well deserved vacation in China), he also brought along a guitar to perform a couple of songs on the air. Bassist Rich Ray joined the musical festivities.
Since the release of Brian's first solo debut album "Mondo Magneto" back in 2006, we've been spinning his rocker "Vinyl" in heavy rotation. We've played it so much on the radio that it's sort of become The Time Machine's unofficial theme song. We may have actually started playing the song back in 2005...but that will be our little secret.
Brian performed a stripped down acoustic version of "Vinyl" for the broadcast in addition to performing a song titled "I Found You" from his upcoming album "This Way Up".
Brian also played a few of his new songs from his forthcoming release that are pure pop bliss. Those songs made their worldwide broadcast debut which is a treat for us since Brian just got off a monster tour playing both guitar and bass for Paul McCartney.
In addition to playing some cool tunes from Paul McCartney, Brian also played some classics from The Beatles on the radio show. He also featured brand new music from Harper Simon (Paul Simon's son) and MGMT.
As guest DJ, Brian also brought wonderful music to the radio show from his former boss and musical legend, Etta James, along with artists as diverse as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Badfinger, Smokey Robinson, Wings, The Bangles, Lewis Taylor, John Lennon, Conrad Korsch, George Harrison, Them with Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, Ringo Starr, and Shakira. Summer Blue's radio co-host, Michael McCartney, added to the music mix with the latest from Brian's band mate in Paul McCartney's band, guitarist Rusty Anderson. Rusty's song "Julia Roberts" was featured along with songs from Jeff Lynne, The Smith Bros., Heart and Rachael Yamagata.

Special thanks to our producer Jenny Leong for dealing with our shave ice addiction and Brittany Rice for lighting and keeping the room at a cool temperature. Mahalo to KEAO's Don Lopez, KPMW's Ryan Piros and singer-songwriter Dave Stephens for making it all possible.

After numerous appearances the past few years as our featured guest artist, rocker and singer-songwriter Dave Stephens returned to The Time Machine with guitar in hand and a stack of albums to be a guest DJ. This time around, not only did Dave perform songs on the air, he also played wonderful music as our guest DJ from artists as diverse as The Grays, Alice Peacock, L.E.O., Kim Stockwood, Billy Joel, Jayhawks, Chris Trapper, Abba, Brandi Carlile, Peter Salett, Bread, Rufus Wainwright, Robbie Dupree, Steve Ward, Keane and Steve Ward.
Summer Blue and Michael McCartney also featured new music on this Maui afternoon FM radio broadcast from Rob Bonfiglio, The Explorers Club, Paul McCartney, Chris Isaak and Mandy Moore. Producers Jenny Leong and Ashley Starr kept the show running smoothly even when Summer and Michael left Dave alone in the broadcast studio to get him lunch from Zippy's. Classic songs from other artists also heard on this radio broadcast include; Keola & Kapono Beamer, Uriah Heep, The Bee Gees, Paul & Linda McCartney, NRBQ, Melissa Manchester, Cliff Richard and a live performance from the Hollywood Television Showcase of "That Thing You Do!" from The Wonders.

The rockin' band The Throwdowns were on The Time Machine last week. We've enjoyed playing their energetic songs from their debut album "Don't Slow Down" since late July. After the group's songs have dominated our playlists the past few months, all four members sat in our studios along with a box of donuts that took a sugar high to a new level. Bassist Kimo Clark, drummer Ian Hollingsworth, lead guitarist Ola Shaw and guitarist/vocalist Erin Smith chatted with Ashley Starr and Michael McCartney about their music.
Ashley Starr and Michael McCartney also featured new music on this Maui afternoon FM radio broadcast from Mark Hudson, Rachael Yamagata and Kings Of Leon. New music from James Carter Cathcart's latest album "I Was Missing You" closed out the broadcast with "It's A Beautiful Thing". Soupy Sales had passed away hours earlier before the broadcast so The Time Machine spun his radio hit from 1965. Our hearts go out to his wife Trudy Carson and his two sons from his previous marriage to Barbara Fox, musicians Tony Sales and Hunt Sales. Songs from other artists also heard on this radio broadcast include; Sarah Hudson, Social Distortion, The Smith Bros., Butch Walker, Fountains Of Wayne, Liz Phair, The Major Labels and Jeff Lynne.

Another vacation for Summer Blue, Ashley Starr and Jenny Leong meant that Michael McCartney was on his own in the broadcast studio. The Hawaiian airwaves were filled some classic AM radio hits along with a recent radio current on The Time Machine from rocker Dave Stephens. There's also comedy from Rap Replinger along with The Time Machine's Matt Burger with Michael McCartney and another episode of "Classic Rock Theater".

Singer-songwriter Anuhea returned to The Time Machine with her guitar last week. Radio host Summer Blue had just returned from a visit to China while Anuhea had just returned from Japan so it was a great time to return to the Hawaiian FM airwaves. Producer Ashley Starr sat down with Anuhea to discuss her self titled debut album along with radio co-host Michael McCartney.
Photo below: Ashley Starr and Anuhea
Anuhea has been on our playlists the past few years with her self released "Rough Cuts" so it was a pleasure having her back in the studios now that her fully produced album has hit the music store shelves and online retailers like iTunes around the world. Her song "Right Love, Wrong Time" was selected as a featured free download on iTunes as the "Discovery of the Week" this past spring and Anuhea's album hit iTunes Top Ten downloads, leap frogging over many major label superstar aritsts on their chart. In addition, Anuhea is currently featured in the new iTunes 9 video guide that shows users how to use the new features in iTunes 9.
Summer Blue also gave spins on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast to artists; Brian Ray, Rachael Yamagata, The Throwdowns, Cobra Starship, Kings Of Leon and the brand new Michael Jackson song "This Is It" that he composed with music legend Paul Anka which was released just last week.

The bass player for Creedence Clearwater Revival shared with the Maui radio audience his work with John McFee and the late Keith Knudsen. The trio formed a band called Jackdawg but their album was never released. The super cool record label Sonic Past Music has officially released the album after nearly two decades. Radio show hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney work up an appetite while spinning music on the FM dial. While management keeps the air conditioner cranked up to Arctic like temperatures to keep the broadcast equipment from overheating, the disc jockeys keep their long sleeves on to keep from freezing. Beach goers hit the Maui shorelines unaware that the DJs on the Hawaiian airwaves are wearing the complete opposite of swimsuits and slippers. Immediately following the program, Summer and Michael run from the air studio to the nearest pizza place to warm up after being locked up for hours on the air. From the photograph above, you can see that they are still thawing out at the pizzeria eatery.
An interview with Pennan Brae can be heard on this program along with the band's new song "Anyways". The Time Machine continues to feature new music from Mandy Moore's upcoming album, "Amanda Leigh", to be released on May 26th. "Bug" resulted from the singer-songwriter having a hankering to close her album with something acoustic and simple. Mandy had the desire to actualize a song in the vein of Harry Nilsson or Randy Newman and "Pocket Philosopher" is a bit light hearted and goofy but also resonates with the excitement of meeting someone new and wanting to stop time so you could figure them out a little more. The album produced by frequent musical guest on The Time Machine, Mike Viola, can be pre-ordered on iTunes.
New songs also featured on this afternoon FM broadcast can be heard from Mink, Paul Carrack (with Timothy B. Schmit and Don Henley), The Handuffs, The Smith Bros. and Jordan Zevon.

We couldn't decide to title this podcast "Allergic To Fun" or "Bad Reputation". Radio hosts of The Time Machine, Summer Blue and Michael McCartney, were in both a Joan Jett mood and a Eytan Mirsy mood on this Maui afternoon FM aircheck. In the end, we went with lifting Eytan Mirsky's song title and why not? Eytan likes pizza just like the rest of The Time Machine crew (seen above after eating three pizzas from Dollies in Kahana) and there really isn't any allergy to fun in Hawaii. Isn't Sheryl Crow's first hit song about wanting to have fun?
Below Photo: Sheryl Crow returned to Maui last week and performed in front of a large crowd under the Hawaiian stars.
In addition to the music of Eytan Mirsky and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, new songs also featured on this Maui broadcast include: Kelly Jones, The Smith Bros., Butch Walker, The Explorers Club, She & Him, Mike Viola and James Carter Cathcart. Rounding out the radio show musically are artists: Maple Mars, George Harrison, Moon Martin, The Partridge Family, Sheryl Crow, The Bee Gees, Electric Light Orchestra, Leslie Gore, Ravyns, The Grass Roots, Hudson Brothers, Lou Christie, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Pilot, Josie & The Pussycats, Kenny Rogers and Richard O'Brien with Patricia Quinn and Little Nell.
Singer-songwriters Chloe F. Orwell and Brad Elvis from the rocking band The Handcuffs were guests on The Time Machine this past week. These two talented artists have contributed to the success of other bands like The Elvis Brothers and Big Hello. The Handcuffs first album "Model For A Revolution" released in 2006 was followed by their latest album "Electroluv" which should be in every music fan's collection. Their music has been featured recently on a number of television series like "Gossip Girl" and "The Hills".
The Handcuffs: Ellis Clark, Brad Elvis, Chloe F. Orwell and Emily Togni.
In addition to the music of Big Hello and The Elvis Brothers, new songs also featured on this afternoon FM broadcast include: Kelly Jones, Tinted Windows, Glenn Tilbrook and The Fluffers, Fountains Of Wayne and She & Him plus our new closing theme for The Time Machine from The Smith Bros. can be heard at the end of the program. Rounding out the broadcast are songs from Mike Viola, Mark Bacino and Paul McCartney.
Singer-songwriter Maxi Dunn was a guest on The Time Machine this past week. The artist from Liverpool was on the same program as The Bleachers so you may hear two of the same songs heard on The Bleachers podcast. In our attempt to save you space on your hard drive or time spent listening online, we have edited the FM broadcast into two parts. The Bleachers portion of the radio show has already been posted. Enjoy the vocal performance of Maxi Dunn, as we have the past few years, in addition to a brand new song from this talented artist.
Also featured on this afternoon FM broadcast is the latest song from Laurie Biagini titled "Another Old Lazy Lyin' On The Beach Afternoon" which fits most of The Time Machine Crew's philosophy. New music from Schuyler Fisk, The Major Labels, Mike Viola, The Smith Bros. and Rachael Yamagata are highlighted. Rounding out the broadcast are songs from; Vanilla, Tommy James & The Shondells, Kay Hanley, Marmalade, Aimee Mann, Fleetwood Mac, The Montanas, The Hollies, Peter Murray and Adam Richman.
Marco Brizuela and Joe Maloney from The Bleachers were musical guests on The Time Machine this past week. Drummer David Hines wasn't available but we hope to have him on the next time the band is on the broadcast. This talented trio has been making a musical buzz in Spin and Rolling Stone. We were honored to have them perform a couple of the new songs from their upcoming album as well as "Stolen" from their recent release "Conjure".
Brand new songs from arists as diverse as Schuyler Fisk, Miles Nielsen, Tinted Windows and Glen Tilbrook & The Fluffers can also be heard on this afternoon FM broadcast. Other artists played by radio hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney include: Rusty Anderson, Michelle Lewis, Jude Cole, Mike Viola, Traveling Wilburys, Dave Edmunds, Brian Ray, Paul McCartney & Wings, Cheap Trick, Devo, Harold Faltermeyer and Fleetwood Mac. Producer Jenny Leong adds an audio trip to 1977 and air talent Kathy Collins join in on the musical fun. Pat Dollenmayer, Mike Clark and Kris Phillips from The Smith Bros. hit the recording studio with their new theme song for The Time Machine radio show.
Singer-songwriter Mandy Moore has a new album coming out this May titled "Amanda Leigh". Mike Viola produced her latest album and we've been enjoying playing a few of the songs off of the upcoming release on The Time Machine. In celebration of this wonderful collaboration, we wanted to bring back her last interview on The Time Machine after her album "Wild Hope" was released back in 2007. John Alagia produced the album with Mandy writing songs with Lori McKenna, Deb Talan and Steve Tannen from The Weepies, Chantal Kreviazuk, James Renald, Chris Holmes and Rachael Yamagata. Mandy has been on our playlists since the beginning of her musical career and we look forward to her musical output for years to come.
Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon broadcast include: The The, Mike Viola & The Candy Butchers (what a coincidence considering that we played Mike Viola who Mandy had yet to meet), Ben Lee, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Lindsey Buckingham, Brown Tidal Wave, John Alagia, Billy Joel, Rachael Yamagata, Martha Davis, Marshall Crenshaw, Low Millions, Jill Sobule and Mental As Anything.
Another random afternoon radio aircheck from the FM dial on Maui's airwaves of The Time Machine featuring hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney. You can actually hear Summer lose her composure after Michael starts giggling over her stated love for the band Morningwood while psyching himself up for the next song. Old school broadcasting would have referred to this as a blooper. Today's world of radio simply calls it teenage humor and doesn't even give it a second thought.
Summer and Michael continue the eclectic mix of pop sounds mixing old and new songs that the daily radio show is known for. Brand new music from Alice Peacock is featured from her latest album "Love Remains" along with a live performance from the singer-songwriter's last guest appearance on the broadcast. New music is also featured from Miles Nielsen, Tinted Windows, Hey Monday, Sheri Miller, Carter Cathcart, Davie Allan & The Arrows with Lisa Mychols, and Second Saturday plus a classic from singer-songwriter Brian Tyrrell.
The Time Machine's producer Jenny Leong kept the two hosts in check while dealing with stacked albums on both vinyl and compact disc including Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. Brian Spence is featured with his 1986 song "Brothers" and from one of The Time Machine's fave spins for over twenty-five years is the forever catchy 1983 "Bop Girl" from Australia's Pat Wilson. Other artists heard on this broadcast include; Candy Butchers, The Rolling Stones, Solveig Sandness, Rhett Miller, Paul McCartney, Mandy Moore, Acid House Kings, Morningwood and the highly underrated Tommy Knight.
Broadcasting on the FM dial on Maui's airwaves isn't always about playing island music. Sometimes it's simply about playing music for the island audience who live here and for the visitors who happen to run across the radio show in their rental cars or hear us blaring in a store while they shop for trinkets to bring back home. It's always a treat to introduce a tourist to the powerful Hawaiian music of Keali'i Reichel and Raiatea Helm, the contemporary style of Anuhea, the slack key masters and the classic island pop of Kalapana, Na Leo Pilimehana and Cecilio & Kapono. Sometimes, as this aircheck clearly demonstrates, afternoon radio hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney just like to cut loose with an eclectic mix of brand new pop tunes played alongside classic pop gems and rare chestnut recordings of yesteryear.
The Time Machine's producer Jenny Leong supplied the plate lunches from Zippy's to keep the show running smoothly on the FM dial without a hitch. Enjoy the latest songs from Carter Cathcart, Frank Bango, Schuyler Fisk, Lucy Woodward, John Micek from Milkshake Jones, Mandy Moore (referred to on the broadcast as Mandy Adams since becoming a newlywed bride to Ryan Adams), Kelly Jones, Rob Bonfiglio and stand up from comedic actress Aisha Tyler.
In addition to the teri beef bun stains from the tasty Zippy's teriyaki sauce left on CD jewel boxes, other artists heard on this afternoon FM radio aircheck include; Fountains Of Wayne, Utopia, Andrew Gold, Smokie, Van Duren, The Beatles, Rhett Miller, Trooper, Bobby Vee, The Knack, Mike Viola & Candy Butchers, Butch Walker, Bobby Sherman and Laughing Dogs.
The Wellingtons remain a favorite band to grace our playlists on The Time Machine. Maui's FM airwaves have had quite a few years of this Aussie group with their previous albums and last year saw the release of "Heading North For The Winter" which landed the band once again on our "Most Played Albums On The Air" for 2008. The line-up includes; drummer Gustav Lindstrom, keyboardist Amy Walters, bassist Kate Goldby and guitar work from both Koji Asano and Zac Anthony. The Time Machine Crew were very honored to have Zac Anthony come on the radio to discuss the band's latest album at the end of their American tour.
Veteran stand up comic Nadine Rajabi returns to The Time Machine to discuss her online series "The Skinny: Fat Free News" with co-host Natasha Leggero.
Other artists heard on this afternoon FM broadcast include Rachael Yamagata, Courtney Jaye, Mike Viola, Brent Cash, Blondie, Paul Carrack with Linda Taylor, Splitsville and Chris Isaak.
Smith may be the most used name when a couple wants to be discreet checking into a motel but it's not the most common name in music. So uncommon that The Time Machine Crew were taken aback by the musical coincidence of having two interviews during the same radio show with both featured Smith among group names. While Morrissey has distanced himself from The Smiths, both Smith & Pyle and The Smith Bros. have embraced it.
Missi Pyle and Shawnee Smith released "It's Okay To Be Happy" in 2008 and the duo's album got a great deal of airplay on The Time Machine. FM listeners on Maui were treated to a wonderful album that should grace your music collection. Shawnee Smith was a guest on the radio show and shared with our audience the fun and the craft of putting this album together.
The Smith Bros. hail out of Ohio and there is not a single Smith in the band. Mike Clark discussed the second album "Restless" from the group.
Other artists heard on this afternoon FM broadcast include Paul & Linda McCartney and Jim Boggia.
The Christmas music continues on The Time Machine with special guests Stu Cook (from JackDawg and Creedence Clearwater Revival), Jim Boggia, Melanie Fontana, Courtney Jaye and Nadine Rajabi. Courtney Jaye and the Aloha Honor System bring us a live performance of "Mele Kalikimaka" this year and Jim Boggia unveils two Christmas classics that he decided would be fun to do. Joining in on the holiday festivities are Ed Lynn from http://suitcasefullofdimes.blogspot.com and Uncle Red Chester with Adam Waltemire from Pop Garden Radio.
Other artists heard on this afternoon radio show aircheck include;
Gary "Pig" Gold, Stephen Colbert, The Davenports, Darlene Love, Stratocruiser, Willie K., Fountains Of Wayne, Ringo Starr, Mike Vancha, Victoria Vox, Robert Downey, Jr., Nichols & May, Rubber Band, Lisa Mychols, National Lampoon, Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert, Rob Bonfiglio, The Beatles, The Shambles, Tom Hooper, The Hives & Cyndi Lauper, Chris Isaak and Jonathan Coultman.
The Christmas season is here. The Time Machine loves this time of year because music is an important element of this season that touches so many. Artists appreciate the chance to express themselves within their realm or step away with a completely different musical approach.
Another reason that The Time Machine Crew enjoys the holidays is that artists drop in on the FM airwaves of Maui as if your next door neighbor stopped by on Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning after the presents have all been opened. Bringing in good cheer and appearing on this FM radio aircheck include; Mike Viola, Kelly Jones, Dave Stephens, Marianne Keith and Laurie Biagini. These singer-songwriters have been a pleasure to play on the radio and sharing the Christmas Spirit with our own Ashley Starr, Jenny Leong, Michael McCartney and Summer Blue was Deron Furukawa. Deron started in radio back in 1998 and during this broadcast he made his first attempt at baking Christmas cookies. Although you don't get to hear Deron during this show, trust us when we say that his tasty treats kept the radio staff well fed during the program. He must have really been paying attention to the Food Network last week.
Other artists heard on this afternoon radio show aircheck include;
The Wellingtons, Vibeke Saugestad, Bangles, Fountains Of Wayne, Sparkle Jets UK, Pugwash & Friends, Liz Phair, Paul Revere and The Raiders, The Christmas Cowboys, Dan Bern & Mike Viola, Candypants, Andy Partridge, Alternativa, Wondermints, Mark Bacino, Beach Boys, Andrew Sisters & Guy Lombardo, Hanson, Cheap Trick, Farrah and Bleu.
Below Photo: Air Talent Deron Furukawa busy with kitchen prep for the Christmas Bake-A-Thon. Notice the Maui News on the kitchen table.
Singer-songwriter Lucy Woodward released her second album "Lucy Woodward...Is Hot And Bothered" this year. Lucy has been on our playlists since her first album was released and she returns to The Time Machine as a guest to discuss her latest album. Lucy also shares her insight on her earlier work. A talented artist who knows her craft inside and out is currently working on her third album.
Singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb has entertained Maui audiences three times during this new century and is sure to return for future performances. The Time Machine with hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartneuy were thrilled with Lisa's recent return to the Valley Isle which included her bringing her guitar to the studio to add to the musical festivities. Singer-songwriting pal Gail Swanson also came along to join in on the fun. Lisa released an album this past summer titled "Camp Lisa". Lisa is joined on the album with friends; Michelle Lewis, Dan Petty, Jill Sobule, Steve Martin, Kay Hanley, Maia Sharp, Nina Gordon, Leland Sklar, Jay Bellerose and Doug Petty. Children are also present on this album that will put a warm smile on any fan of music who has memories of summer camp. She shared her thoughts about making the album along with songs from throughout her career.
Other artists heard on this afternoon FM aircheck include Rick Springfield and Eytan Mirsky.

Singer-songwriter Evie Sands was a guest on The Time Machine. The talented artist shared her thoughts on her music with our radio audience. Evie's songs have been a part of our playlists and lives that it was an honor to have her on the air.
Other artists heard on this Maui FM aircheck include: Linda Ronstadt, Adam Marsland's Chaos Band and The Hollies.
Singer-songwriter Mike Viola was a guest on The Time Machine last week. Mike's music has long been on our playlists since the nineties. From his own Candy Butchers to film soundtrack work on "That Thing You Do!" and "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" to his involvement with L.E.O. and The Major Labels, Viola has continued to win our audience over with catchy melodies and killer hooks.
Mike's emotive voice on albums under his own name continues that tradition. His recent album "Lurch" released in late 2007 is an album that needs to be in the collection of every music lover. Outside of his recent work with Bleu and Ducky Carlisle as the rocking trio The Major Labels this year, Mike recently produced and arranged the third album from Kelly Jones titled "SheBANG!", which saw a September release and has filled our airwaves with songs that are simply pure pop bliss. Adam Schlesinger from Ivy and Fountains Of Wayne also co-wrote a song with Kelly for the album. Along with her original songs and a batch of songs written with Mike Viola, this album is already getting some heavy airplay here on the Maui airwaves. The album clocks in at just under 28 minutes and all ten songs are fantastic. So catchy and melodic as if early eighties Marshall Crenshaw and The Bangles decided to work together might give you an idea of what this album full of pop gems sounds like. The album "SheBANG!" can be found at CD Baby and will most likely be one of our most played albums on the air this year joining releases from Rachael Yamagata, The Pretenders, She & Him, Rick Springfield, Randy Newman and of course - The Major Labels.
Since Kelly Jones was a guest on The Time Machine a few weeks ago, it only made sense that we finally get a chance to have Mike Viola on the FM dial to discuss his music, his thoughts and life. He also shared some exciting news about our most played artist from last year with radio host Michael McCartney. He has composed some songs with fellow singer-songwriter Mandy Moore and will be producing her next album in a couple of weeks.
Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include; The Major Labels, The Bangles, The Candy Butchers and Kelly Jones.

The Liking Strikes are the musical duo of Lacey Wright and Carter Stewart. They recently performed up and down the west coast this past summer including the International Pop Overthrow Music Festival (IPO) in Los Angeles at Huntington Beach. The Time Machine recently had the band on the air for an interview.
Other artists heard during this Maui afternoon FM radio aircheck with host Michael McCartney and producer Jenny Leong covering for co-host Summer Blue include; Elton John, Butch Walker, Raspberries, Lovin' Spoonful, Ringo Starr, Utopia, Bangles, Airwaves and David Pomeranz. Also brand new music featured from Charlotte Sometimes, Michael Carpenter & The Cuban Heels, Courtney Jaye, Lisa Loeb, The Pretenders and Rachael Yamagata.

Singer-songwriter Irene Cara has a new album coming out towards the end of the year titled "Irena Cara Presents Hot Caramel". The two disc set features drummer LaFrae Olivia Sci, bassist Donna Hairston, guitarist Sheryl Bailey, singer-songwriter Audrey Martell and the Poindexter sisters - Reina Yvonne Poindexter on vocals and bassist/singer-songwriter Errica Poindexter. Along with Irene, these gifted artists make up the band Hot Caramel. The first single from the upcoming album is "How Can I Make U Love Me" and Irene gave us the opportunity to play the song at the end of summer. While hanging out at Kaanapali beach on Maui, Irene took the time to be our musical guest on The Time Machine, sharing exciting future plans for Hot Caramel and wonderful insightful stories from the past.
Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include; The Emotions, Andrew Gold, Luther Vandross, Heart, Henry Gross, Five Man Electrical Band, The Williams Brothers and Lindsey Buckingham.

Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon radio broadcast include; Terry Jacks, Susanna Hoffs & Matthew Sweet, The Knack, The Beatles, Donny Osmond, The Traveling Wilburys and Dave Stephens.
*Special thanks to Tom Weir of Studio City Sound and Courtney Wilmer for pulling engineering duties (he deserves extra credit for having to listen Michael McCartney sing - nobody needs to hear that). A big Mahalo Nui Loa goes out to both songwriter Larry Weir and Estelle Harrison.
Summer Blue, Jenny Leong and Michael McCartney returned to The Time Machine studios after a brief vacation which featured guest DJ Ed Lynn goes into detail on this afternoon FM aircheck. Ed Lynn is the host of the podcast "Suitcase Full Of Dimes" which is one of the finest indie music podcasts online today.
Some of the artists heard on this broadcast were also part of the concert line-up for the International Pop Overthrow in Los Angeles which is still going on. If you're in Southern California this week be sure to check it out. One of our most played artists, Emitt Rhodes, came to see rocker Ken Sharp perform his latest batch of songs.
Ken Sharp (who is pictured above hoisted into the air by Rob Bonfiglio from The Skies Of America and Michael McCartney from The Time Machine) opens up this radio aircheck with a song off of his critically acclaimed album "Sonic Crayons" (Four stars from the hard to please MOJO no less). Other artists from the International Pop Overthrow heard on this broadcast include: The Liking Strikes, Michael Ubaldini, Blake Jones and The Trike Shop, Poplord (it is their song "Wake Up Tired" that this episode lifted for a radio podcast title) and Nushu.
Some rare songs from the vaults were aired from The Spectrum, Don Scardino, Lee Dorsey, Sidewalk Skipper Band and The Cufflinks with a big mahalo to Jeffrey Glenn for his kokua.
Adding to the musical fun are new songs from Zach Gill (with Hawaii's Jack Johnson on the drums), Brian Ray, She & Him, Tristan Prettyman and The Major Labels (the latest project from Bleu, Ducky Carlisle and Mike Viola) plus Jeff Lynne, Karla DeVito, Trooper, Butch Walker, Rachel Sweet, Kim Stockwood, The Red Button, Emitt Rhodes and Rachael Yamagata.
*Below photograph cleary demonstates the fun that radio folk can get into. The Time Machine and Pop Garden Radio hit Disneyland's Splash Mountain and GET SOAKED.
Concert impresario and Hawaii's legendary disc jockey for over fifty years, Tom Moffatt, was our radio guest. Tom was on Maui to promote his upcoming concert with The Stylistics, The Chi-Lites and The Three Degrees. He shared many of his stories from the many diverse musical diverse talents that he has worked with over the decades including Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin and Karen Carpenter. Some of his incredible stories can be found in his book written with Jerry Hopkins titled "The Showman of the Pacific: 50 Years of Radio and Rock Stars". In the photograph with Tom is radio host Kathy Collins who took Tom and our listeners down Memory Lane during the interview.
Artists heard on this afternoon aircheck include: The Beamer Brothers,The Three Degrees, Cecilio and Kapono,The Stylistics,The Chi-Lites and a snippet of Tom Moffatt's singing career from the fifties.

Don Miggs from the rock band Miggs was a guest on The Time Machine this past month. Getting heavy airplay out here on Maui the past couple of months has been "I Believe" from Miggs. Don discussed the music of the band and performed these songs live on the air:
FOR YOU
LOVE MACHINE
ON YOUR OWN SIDE
MAYBE
In addition to the studio recordings from Miggs, other artists heard on this afternoon FM radio aircheck include; Io Perry, The Beatles and Kelly's Heels.
The last weekend of June 2008 brought Summer Blue and Michael McCartney into The Time Machine studios with the usual blend of old songs and catchy new tunes. This approach to the FM dial on Maui's airwaves is either embraced by the radio audience or they quickly find themselves switching the dial in search of something a bit more safe and conservative. Whatever the response ends up to be from the listeners...it's really the result of having fun on the air with cool songs that keeps any member of The Time Machine Crew from feeling praised or persecuted. This afternoon radio aircheck has a wide variety of musical artists including; Second Saturday, Vibeke, Bangles, She & Him, The Bunnies, Ken Sharp, Priscilla Ahn, Ex-Norwegian, Trooper, Rachel Sweet, Bee Gees, Liz Phair, Ringo Starr & Chrissie Hynde, Northern Light, Lisa Mychols, Supertramp, Sheri Miller, The Producers, Katie Herzig, Mike & The Mechanics, Pretenders, Donna Loren and Peter Gabriel with the Soweto Gospel Choir from the film "Wall-E".
Another one of those lazy days that have us heading into the studio after snorkeling off the Kaanapali shore off the island of Maui that often results in fun song selections from the past to play alongside the latest music we air on the radio everyday. Host Michael McCartney found himself once again without his co-host Summer Blue to spin tunes on the airwaves (the hosts rotate their thoughts on who is the real slacker in the duo and Summer won that day and decided to continue to snorkel). The Time Machine's producer Jenny Leong supplied the soda and pizza to keep the show running on the FM dial without a hitch. Enjoy the latest songs from Brad Paisley and Kaitlyn Anderson.
In addition to the pizza grease stains left on CD jewel boxes, other artists heard on this afternoon FM radio aircheck include; Eye To Eye, Steele Breeze, Walter Clevenger and The Dairy Kings, Face Dancer, Hawks, The Undertones, The Andersons, Marshall Crenshaw, Lou Ann Barton, Linda Ronstadt, Fountains Of Wayne, America, Cheap Trick, Pilot and Balance.
Lazy days that have us waltzing into the studio after surfing the waves and lying on the sandy beaches of Maui results in interesting song selections from the past that flow with the latest brand new music we play on the radio everyday. Host Michael McCartney found himself without his co-host Summer Blue (everyone deserves a day off) to spin the songs. So with The Time Machine's producer Jenny Leong supplying the strawberry smoothies to keep the show running on the FM dial, enjoy the latest songs from; Kay Hanley, Marmalade Souls, The Oohs, Bleu and Jenny Frederick.
Outside of the brain freeze caused by the smoothies, other artists heard on this afternoon radio aircheck include; Airwaves, Badfinger, Bumpus, Eric Carmen, Shaun Cassidy, Denny Laine, Simon and Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, The Rubinoos, Clout, Hawks, The Monkees, Electric Light Orchestra, Abba, Traveling Wilburys, Paul and Linda McCartney, The Cowsills, Melissa Etheridge and The Beatles.
"The Ed and Greg Show" has been spicing up Maui mornings on WILD 105.5 FM. The KPMW studios finds the Maui Time Weekly's Restless Native a.k.a. Starr Begley dropping by every Monday morning. Starr finally had the nerve to publish her weekly experience at the cost of losing her paycheck. The column below is from the May 22, 2008 issue of Maui Time Weekly.
Unless I totally suck at math – actually I kind of do – this past Monday has marked my 10th month on Wild 105.5's The Ed & Greg Show. In my humble and biased opinion, The Ed & Greg Show is the best damn morning show on the island.
Wild 105.5 is an independently run station in no way affiliated with the giant Pacific Radio Group. Not that I don't listen to PRG stations, because I do. In fact, if I were a dude, I'm pretty sure that I'd have a thing for Nikki D, who is totally awesome and should really come over one night to play cards and eat boiled peanuts. By the way, Nikki, you need to team up with your co-host Mackie and impose a hostile takeover against Trance. What is this, the Yakuza? Strength in numbers, girlfriend, strength in numbers.
But when the Zoo Crew is busy pushing lawnmowers up Dairy Road, pretending to be homosexual Indians, making Nikki wear a bikini in the freezing cold or dressing Mackie in an elf costume , we on The Ed and Greg Show are busy talking about real Maui issues like skanky first graders, drug addled parents, using Photoshop to make your kids cuter than they are, hunting ghosts in Waikapu, why it's better to let your teenage daughter get pregnant rather than hand her a condom, gambling and why I love it, why we're cool with Kendall Grove admitting to smoking pot and being a role-model to our kids, how neither Ed or Greg has ever smoked a bowl in their life, the difference between a "moke" and a "local", boobs – small boobs, big boobs, saggy boobs, fake boobs, pierced boobs–how to purchase a butt-plug for your husband, the environment, politics, what a narrow-minded conservative Greg is, how ignorant I am, how it's humanly possibly for Ed to be such a complete arse when it comes to MMA fighting, how unfortunate it is that men who kick off their slippers and shout, "What faka, like go?" in parking lots turn me on, the rise and fall of the stripper pole in my house, how it makes me homicidal and pissy to be called "girly girl," wrestling and how fake-yet-awesome it is, haoles, how Oprah is definitely the anti-Christ and how Google is planning world domination.
On my very first segment (I appear on the show every Monday at 10 a.m.), I was scared out of my mind. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I suffered intestinal upset from the stress. To make matters worse, Ed and Greg immediately went off on Holoholo Girl (my supervisor at the time)–who was listening to the show .
I totally got busted for it when I got back to the office. But I've kept going back week after week and I think that the three of us have gelled and bounce insults off of each other quite nicely. Either that or I've just gotten used to making an ass of myself on air. Probably the latter.
*Starr Begley just went and upset everybody again. MTW

As we present another FM aircheck today, we have to honor those who have lost their lives in defending America's love for freedom on this Memorial Day. The Time Machine's Mike Mantel shares his feelings on this Memorial Day weekend.
"I would like everyone to be careful not to turn Memorial Day into another Veterans Day. I can see this slowly happening as each year passes. I am a veteran and it seems I get more attention on Memorial Day than I do on Veterans Day. That truly saddens me."
"Memorial Day is for those who gave all. We need to keep it that way, otherwise their sacrifice will be in vain."
This Maui radio afternoon aircheck features an interview with singer-songwriter Keith LeVoy and his song "For Your Time".
Rob Schneider presents his graduation speech to the class of 2008 and three brand new songs from Rachael Yamagata's "Loose Ends" CD are featured. Other artists heard on the broadcast include; Charlotte Sometimes, Ace Frehley, Lowen and Navarro, Butch Young, Duffy, The Babys, Bobby Russell, The Beach Boys, Laurie Biagini, The Cowsills, Greg Kihn Band, Ian Gomm, The Cars and a sneak peak at Micah Wolf's sophomore album release.

* As we run low on available server space, we have to make room for newer interview segments and radio airchecks. This broadcast is still available as a podcast for your listening pleasure.
Kīlauea is an active volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, one of five shield volcanoes that together form the Island of Hawaii. In Hawaiian, the word kīlauea means "spewing" or "much spreading", in reference to the mountain's frequent outpouring of lava. Issuing lava continuously since January 1983, Kīlauea is currently the most active volcano on the planet, an invaluable resource for volcanologists, and also the planet's most visited active volcano. Kīlauea is the most recent of a series of volcanoes that have created the Hawaiian Archipelago, as the Pacific Plate has moved and is moving over the Hawaii hotspot (see Lō'ihi Seamount). The plate under Kilauea, crosses over a hotspot of land which causes them to crash together and therefore errupt.
Every now and then, volcanic ash ends in the air and can often cover the entire island chain with "vog" which has a look and feel of smog and sometimes fog. It can be a health risk if the the vog is thick. The following FM aircheck has a health warning issued on the airwaves of Maui which is the closest island to the volcanic activity of the "big island" of Hawaii. The warning could be familiar to those who live in cities that issue smog alerts.
For a live panorama of the Pu`u `O`o vent at Kilauea Volcano you can go to this website:
The month of May had quite a share of vog in the air for Hawaii. Artists heard on this afternoon broadcast include; Miggs, The Weepies, Roy Orbison, The Monkees, Paul McCartney, The Cars, Ludo, Boz Scaggs, Simon and Garfunkel, REO Speedwagon, Katy Perry, Fall Out Boy with John Mayer, Jane Wiedlin, David Ford, Neil Diamond, The Ting Tings, Shake Some Action, Electric Light Orchestra, Harry Nilsson, Eddie Money, Mudcrutch and a rarely heard unreleased gem from the "London Town" sessions from Wings.
Part One of two podcasts where Guest DJs Curtis Murphy (singer-songwriter from the Curtis Murphy Syndicate) and actress Bridgetta Tomarchio take over the FM airwaves from radio hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney . "The Time Machine" audience was familiar with the music of return guest artist Curtis Murphy who did a splendid job of selecting songs. Adding to the festivities of song selection was Bridgetta Tomarchio, who shared music from bands featured on her television series, "Project My World". The Time Machine Crew usually cuts loose on Saturdays. It may be because management usually isn't around during the weekend or it may be the fairly large amount of phone calls on the studio line that keep the music flowing in a way that the other stations up and down the FM dial on Maui can't do. Indie music alongside artists from major labels always make an interesting mix. Brand new songs and old songs keep the staff busy on the air opening and closing CD players and spinning vinyl on turntables.
Artists heard on this FM aircheck include; Cori Yarckin, Sabrina X (above photograph), Mike Viola, Ruin The Rain, Beatles, Straight Eight, Billy Joel, Josh Fix, Laurie Biagini, Toto, Keith LeVoy, Aimee Mann, Chris Holmes & Rachael Yamagata, Buster, Neil Diamond, Mandy Moore, Shake Some Action, The Red Button, Jason Mraz & Rachael Yamagata, Bangles and Splitsville.

Also on the radio program:
Singer-songwriter Micah Wolf was a return guest giving our audience a quick update on two upcoming concert performances in Hawaii double billed with Matt Costa who has been touring like a whirlwind with his second release "Unfamiliar Faces" on Jack Johnson's label Brushfire Records. Micah also discussed the finishing touches on his second album with the help of Rick Tyner on bass and Rick Tyner and Chava Godinez on the drums.
Chiming in are radio hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney discussing Summer's training for an upcoming triathlon to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Singer-Songwriter Seth Swirsky along with Mike Ruekberg are the multi-talented duo behind The Red Button. Seth was a guest on The Time Machine and discussed the album "She's About To Cross My Mind" that is filled with so many musical gems that the album became one of our most played albums on the air for 2007. In addition to The Red Button, Seth also talked about his solo work and his many records composed for other artists like; Rufus Wainwright, Taylor Dayne, Al Green, Jane Weidlin, Michael McDonald, Celine Dion, The Poppies, Xscape, Olivia Newton-John, Charles & Eddie, Smokey Robinson, Brenda K. Starr, Trey Lorenz, Bonfire, Air Supply, Faith Evans and Tina Turner. In addition to getting the chance to compose songs with Eric Carmen, Seth is also a published best selling author ("Baseball Letters" from 1996, "Every Pitcher Tells A Story" from 1999 and "Something To Write Home About" from 2003) and a film maker. His documentary film "A Year In The Life" is set for a summer release and consists of interviews he had done with his hand-held camera with people who had a story about themselves and The Beatles. It’s not a “tribute” or “anthology” piece, according to Seth, just people from all walks of life with a neat, specific Beatles story.
Seth Swirsky also performed a bit on his guitar during the interview to demonstrate the inner workings of his songwriting craft.
Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon broadcast on the FM dial hosted by Summer Blue and Michael McCartney were; Joey Ramone, Olivia Newton-John and Taylor Dayne.
Singer-songwriter Laura Bradley graced The Time Machine studios along with producer and bassist Michael Wallace for a nice performance on the FM dial. Maui's radio audience was pleased to hear songs done live from Laura's album "Rain".
